Playoffs? Playoffs?
We lost to a team we shouldn't have in the first round. Wow, what a letdown. Bringing the down
a peg.
Bringin' the Heat
Fall Softball - Game 9 - Frozen Ropes 16 , LazyBears 12
Not a great effort, but nearly got into a fight again. Bob Klausing filling in for Mike Zollner's
intensity.
Fall Softball - Game 10 - LazyBears 24 , Sparta #1 12
Close game until a fight erupted on the other field to delay the game. LazyBears erupt for 8
more after that; rest of the game is an afterthought.
LazyBears start the playoff season at 7pm vs. Bud Light (I think) with a chance to win the whole thing,
all they need is 3 wins. Come see and live the last of the LazyBear experience for '09!
Salty and Sweet
Fall Softball - Game 6 - LazyBears 18 , BudLight Reloaded 8
Don't anger the LazyBears! After the end of the first game pissing match, the LazyBears came out hitting
keeping the game close until the what is now typical 9 run inning ends the game. The bottom of the final inning also
showcased a discussion about high school friends that apparently was upsetting enough to a member of the other team to once
again threaten the pitcher with harm even after he had been hit already in the game. Nothing happened and likely never
will since the LazyBears talk, but aren't there to add to their felony totals. I wish other teams/certain players could
take softball a little less serious and have fun. The LazyBears should be prime example #1 of a team that loves the
game b/c of the friends and the fun atomosphere the team showcases. Enough of the editorial, I'll see ya next week.
Fall Softball - Game 5 - Frozen Ropes 24 , LazyBears 2
Salty is a good adjective to describe most (all) aspects of the LazyBears performance tonight. Combined
6 hits, inning in which all infielders committed an error allowing 16 runs to score, and a line drive hit 1 foot over
the pitchers head all lead to a fun filled evening that ended with some fireworks. To summarize the fireworks, they
weren't like the size of a grand finale, rather a bottle rocket war that just revved up the LazyBears for game 2 on the night.
Fall Softball 2009
WE WON OUR 100th GAME!!!
Fall Softball - Game 4 - LazyBears 18, BoBecks 8
Hey hitting welcome back! It only took until the 5th when the LazyBears tallied 13 runs to shortgame BoBecks.
Celebration to commence to honor the all-time greats and leasts of the LazyBears history! In similar fashion to the
LazyBears holiday party being held on Superbowl Sunday; this celebration will likely be 2 months after our 100th win.
Fall Softball - Game 3 - Fults 8 , LazyBears 7
Hey hitting where did you go from last week. This game went 8 innings with the LazyBears not scoring for the second
time in the extra inning only to give up another heartbreaking 2-out hit to snacth a loss from the grip of victory.
"...spent most our night living in a hitter's paradise."
Fall Softball - Game 1 - Outsiders Sports Bar 23, LazyBears 22
Coolio gave us the beat and I just changed the words to highlight the kind of night it was. The Outsiders Bar and
Grill team brought their lumber to the game and their rock hard softballs as well, which allowed the team to really do a number
on SP Daniel Bollmann. Game 1 featured a tight contest that had the LazyBears in the lead by five featured by a Jeff
Mulholland welcome back homerun. However, the lead was short lived as the balls went flying again and the LazyBears
were only able to collect 1 out before the Outsiders scored their 6 to end the game and keep the LazyBears at 99 wins
on their career. Hitting starts were Danny Brewer 4-6 3R, 2B, and 3B; Tyler Jeffers 2-3 2R, HR, and 4 RBIs; Chauncey
Brooks 4-5 3R, 3B, and 2RBIs; Tim Baum 3-5 3R, 2B, 3B, HR, and 4RBIs; and Jeff Mulholland 2-3 2R, HR, and 4RBIs.
Fall Softball - Game 2 - Outsiders Sports Bar 31, LazyBears 20
Another game and another similar result. They flat out mash the ball. This time the game included a 17-run
inning to put the LazyBears on their heels where they were never able to regain solid footing. LazyBears stay at 99
wins looking forward to next week to get to the century mark. Who kept the LazyBears alive with their sticks: Tyler
Jeffers 3-5 2R, 2 2B, 2RBIs; Chauncey Brooks 3-5 3R, 2B, HR, 3RBIs; Jeff Russell 2-3 4R, 2 2B, 2BB, RBI; Jeff Mulholland 3-3
2R, 2B, 3B, 6RBIs; and Daniel Bollmann 3-4 3R, 2 2B, 3RBIs.
Come back and watch for "100" Wednesday at 7 vs. Fults and 9 vs. Frozen Ropes.

Chester Week 5
LazyBears 8, Bomb Squad 1
Hitting never gets it together, but the defense holds up well.
LazyBears 17, Vasquez Fitness 9
Akward game with all types of rule challenges and yelling. LazyBears prove their point and put a hurting
on Vasquez after that point 15-0 in the last five innings.
Chester Week 4
LazyBears 17, Team Joel 5
Hitting ok today. Defense sketchy.
Bud Light 12 , LazyBears 8
Scratch hitting was all that could be done. No rally sustained.

Not as good as the first game.

LazyBears now 2-2 at Chester.
Week 4 (Red Bud) - LazyBears 10, Mustangs 6
Another performance similar to last week vs. Fults. Pitching and defense lead the way versus one of the best hitting
teams in RB. LazyBears now 6-3 (1-0).
Chester Week 1
LazyBears 19 , Bomb Squad 4
First 16 batters reach base safely and all 16 score in that inning to give a cushion the LazyBears never got off of.
Baboons 12, LazyBears 11
Tight game that goes to 10 innings finally won by the Baboons. Several great plays/ers on both sides contribute
to the best contests to be played in Chester this year.
Week 3 (Red Bud)- LazyBears 16 , Fults 6
More magical pitching and defense lull Fults to sleep as the LazyBears quietly short games Fults, beating them for the
first time in the last four meetings. LazyBears now 5-3 (1-0).
Week 2 (Red Bud)- LazyBears 18 , Bullpen 17
LazyBears bounce back in the bottom of the seventh inning with 2 runs to steal the game back from the Bullpen.
Zollner with a sacrifice fly error that allows Degen to score the winning run.
Week 1 (Red Bud) - Outsiders 13, LazyBears 11 8inn.
Early on the LazyBears did their best to remain hibernating getting behind by eight runs early, 9-1 only
to rally back in typical fashion in the 5th, 6th, and 7th to tie the game at 11 and send it to extras. With only a modest
two runs in the top of the inning the LazyBears were excited to get to the plate and get their first win of the season.
Starting with a runner on 2nd per the extra inning rules it seemed like a piece of cake to win the game, but after two line
outs and a pop out the LazyBears were sent home with their first loss instead.
The LazyBears look to rebound Thursday at 8:00 vs. The Bullpen, a team they have not yet seen.
Preseason Tournament (Red Bud)
LazyBears go 3-2 with similar pattern of lose first, win three in a row, get tired and lose again. Wins vs. Hi-way
Motors, Fults, and Crush. Losses to Crush and Rebels.
Game Results 2008
What went wrong?
A brief writeup has been 8 months in the making, but needless to say the LazyBears did not win the Fall
League Tournament in Red Bud. A gutsy performance by the LazyBears went for naught as they were outscored all game long
only to finally have a chance to win the game in their final at bat only to fall short 25-24 to ING. The heartbreaking
loss and subsequential fall into oblivion have left the LazyBears ready to rebound this year in both Chester and Red Bud summer
leagues. Check back often for updates on their season.
Cookies
Baking…LazyBears Raking
LazyBears 11, Mary's
Bar 1 - With cookies in hand, thanks to LazyBear supporters
Emily Maxfield and Lindsay Cash, the LazyBears went back to business trying to become the only team to go undefeated in Red
Bud’s Fall League.
The action started off with
a new opponent for the LazyBears, Mary’s Bar. They like most of the other
opponents were of no match for the LazyBears as it was the fourth inning before a run scored while the LazyBears were able
to tally nine over that same time. With a few more hits in the fifth inning the
LazyBears short-gamed their fifth team of the season by a score of 11-1. The
LazyBears were a little down on themselves as they were unable to reach their average scoring margin of 16.25 runs, but they
will settle for the victory. The win moved the LazyBears to 9-0 (5-0) and one
step away from a perfect regular season. Zach Miller had a homer for the LB’s
and 4 RBIs, while Mike Zollner, making his fall debut, was 3-3 with a double and two triples.
LazyBears 22, ING
20 - After a game was played and cookies were consumed the LazyBears faced off against division rival ING, their
toughest opponent on the season. Previously, the LazyBears defeated ING 12-11
in a thrilling game and this time the LB’s were looking for a bit of an easier time.
It seemed after four innings that the LazyBears had got what they wished for after putting up a 10-run bottom of the
fourth to extend their lead to 18-5. ING would not go away quietly as they were
able to put up six runs in the fifth to avoid the shortgame, but even with the LazyBears cooler hitting ING’s rally
was not enough as the LazyBears end the season UNDEFEATED with a 22-20 victory. Big
hitters were Ryan Degen with a triple and three homeruns with 6 RBIs and Jordan Beckley with 2 hits and 4 RBIs.
Tournament games start next
week for the LazyBears at 8 and if they win the final game is at 9. |
Week 3 and 4...win some more
Week 4
Game 1 - LazyBears 16, B. Wilson 15
B.Wilson and his team of merry men came out of the gates smoking leading for a few minutes of trepidation for
the LazyBears as the finally faced a deficit of greater than 3 runs. Down six however was no matter to the LazyBears
as they pounce back to put seven up on the board to regain the lead 10-6 in the fourth. Schotty pitching and some ?able
defense made the game interesting as it entered the top of the 7th with the game knotted at fifteen. A fly out, a base
hit and a snappy 6-4-3 DP made for some late inning heroics from the bottom of the order as the first two runners reached
base. A deep sacrifice fly (that was dropped by the LF) allowed the game winning run to score and moved the LazyBears
this much closer to being undefeated in the regular season 7-0 (5-0).
Game 2 - LazyBears 21, Andersons 9
Two impressive innings were all the LazyBears needed in this game as they suprised Andersons with their hitting prowess.
The first and third innings yeilded nine runs in each for the LazyBears capped off in the first by Rory Renk's first home
run, making it so that every LazyBear has hit a home run in his career. As exciting as the game was it is the result
that is the most exciting as the LazyBears are now 8-0 (5-0) with only two games left in the regular season and the end of
the season tournament.
The LazyBears try for the perfect season Oct. 1 at 7 (Mary's Bar) and 9 (ING).
Week 2 - Two more W's
Week two also started with a flourish as the LazyBears took on divisional
opponent B. Wilson. Early and often the LazyBears put run after run up on the board to take an early 9-0 lead after
three. Instead of the LazyBears mailing it in like they normally do the hitting kept on coming. In the fifth inning
needing one run and to hold B. Wilson to nothing to end the game the LazyBears held nothing back putting up a 10-spot in the
inning to take a 19-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. The bottom saw B. Wilson score their lone run of the game,
but the LazyBears secured the victory 19-1 and moved to 3-0 (2-0) on the season. Stat keeping returned in this game
just in time for Ryan Degen (4-4 2B, 3B, 2HR 6RBIs), Sean Zollner (4-4 3RBIs), Chauncey Brooks (2-3 HR 3RBIs), and Tyler Jeffers
(2-3 3B, HR 2RBIs). These fellas were just a small sample of the team as the whole team hit well in this game.
Game two later in the night was vs. Bud Light.
Game two went similarly to game 1 as the LazyBears put the pedal to the
metal early with 11 runs in the first 3 innings compared to four for Bud Light to give them an early and insurmountable lead
as the LazyBears tacked on the necessary 4 additional runs to make the game a short one with the LazyBears victorious 15-5
in 5 innings. Play of the game goes to Tim Baum for comitting the LazyBears first 4 base error on the season as he
sped back to catch a deep drive only to see the ball glance off his glove onto the top of the fence, bouncing twice on
the top before falling for a HR. The same cast of characters were the big hitters in this game as Ryan Degen (3-3
2B, 3B, HR, 3RBIs), Sean Zollner (2-3 2-3B), Tyler Jeffers (3-3 HR 2RBIs), Jordan Beckley (2-4 HR 2RBIs), and Tim Baum
(2-2 3B 3RBIs) all had stellar plate appearances. Jordan Beckley's homerun was of the walkoff variety in the bottom
of the 5th while Ryan Degen was 7-7 on the night with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homeruns, and 9RBIs on the night.
What a great effort for the LazyBears 4-0 (2-0) as they look forward to
next week versus a divisional team, the Juggernauts, in both ends of the double header starting at 9 o'clock.
Fall Ball Starts with series of wins
With a influx of talent from the Sparta "minor league" (kidding) franchise
the Blue Baboons the LazyBears started their fall ball season on the right note with two victories. The LazyBears beat
divison "B" team IMT by a score of 19-1. "Impressive hitting performances all around," says Daniel Bollmann, "Our
defense was there too." The first victory of the season was sweet, but the LazyBears had one of the most important matchups
of the season in game two playing ING.
Game two on the night for the LazyBears was game one for ING on the night
which was important as ING was not ready to play in the first few innings as the LazyBears built a lead that they would never
relinquish even with their typical late inning collapse. The final of the game was 12-11 moving the LazyBears to 2-0
(1-0) on the season and in first place after week one. "Great plays by the defense behind me helped out immensely in
tonight's game and I can't say enough about our new players tonight either big hits and solid defense, just what we needed,"
said Daniel Bollmann.
The LazyBears will move onto next week playing division foe B. Wilson and
Bud Light at 8 and 10.
The Lost Lazy Season
After the worst loss of the season the LazyBears and the website
went by the wayside as the LazyBears concentrated on returning to form.
It didn't take long to see signs of life as the LazyBears entered the Red Bud Fireman's
Picnic Tournament, a yearly tournament featuring the best teams from the area. The LazyBears entered the tournament
as the lowest seed in the tournament being a Class E team playing with 16 "D" teams and 7 "C" teams in the same tournament,
but that was no problem for the LazyBears. We returned to our old form of timely and clutch hitting mixed with a swirl
of slick defense in our games in the tournament.
In the first game the LazyBears took on the Mustangs from Red Bud and dismantled them
by outscoring them 15-0 through five innings. From there on the LazyBears allowed 2 runs to score in the bottom to take
the first game of the tournament by a score of 15-2; placing them in the winners bracket. With game on Friday night
complete the LazyBears waited until Saturday to return to the diamond for the second of what they hope to be many games.
Nine a.m. comes early
in the morning after a night out at the picnic, but the LazyBears were ready for action albeit in the 3rd inning versus Triple
Crown. After a rough two innings to start the game the LazyBears found themselves down 9-0 and having gone six up and
six down, but then the magic returned as the LazyBears hit and hit some more. Chipping away at the lead for the whole
game the LazyBears won in their typical late inning almost collapsing fashion taking a four run lead into the bottom of the
inning only to hang on to win the game 25-24. This left the LazyBears 2-0 with a matchup vs. the FourBaggers to follow
in a few hours.
The LazyBears got back
to doing what they do best and that is hit. Instead of lulling the team to sleep with lethargic efforts in the first
few innings the LazyBears came out banging the ball around putting up a quick 15 runs in the first three innings, leaving
the FourBaggers stunned. The FourBaggers were only able to pick up 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth which gave the
LazyBears the 15-2 win and a 3-0 record in the tourney which ensured them to finish in the money.
Good thing the LazyBears
started the tourney hot and were already in the money since they ran into a buzzsaw known as the Gorillas who with their years
of experience and flat out abililty were able to beat a weaker however scrappy LazyBear team 12-6. The loss placed the
LazyBears on the brink of elimination.
In what turned out to
be the final game of the tourney for the LazyBears they faced off versus the Clubbers (a team that later will win the Fults
tournament). After back and forth hitting by both teams the LazyBears were defeated 26-25 in an epic struggle that came
down to the last inning where the LazyBears couldn't mount and sort of comeback sending them home in 5th place in the tournament.
Stats for the tournament
will be updated in each players personal bio.
The LazyBears were riding
high throughout the tournament, but the momentum did not carry through the season as they returned to duty in Red Bud, but
couldn't scrap a win together in their next 4 games moving them to 1-9 in Red Bud. The LazyBears also went to a State
Qualifier in Wamac and the State Tournament in Chester with the same result 0-2 in each. Both tournaments and all the
games were full of moments that the LazyBears were not thrilled to recall and left them demoralized.
However, after a downturn
there is always an upswing and the LazyBears found themselves back in the W column in their last five games in Red Bud
to give them a final record of 6-9 for the summer.
The wins give the momentum
the LazyBears need to reach the upper eshilon of the Red Bud league and the first step will be fall ball starting Sept. 3rd
back in Red Bud.
First Win followed by worst loss of season
June 10th – Fults 25, LazyBears 12
Just when you thought the LazyBears had started to find their groove the LazyBears came back
to reality. The Fults team came out hot and they never stopped as they put up run after run and scored in every inning making
the game a short one at 25-12. The LazyBears did hit during the game they were just outmanned in this game. Most successful
hitters in the game were Jon Norton, Chauncey Brooks, Billy Schlimme, and Kyle Schwartz were all 2-3. The LazyBears are now
1-5 and play next week vs. Weir automotive.
LazyBears Crack Win Column at Red Bud
June 3rd – LazyBears 21, Bud Light 11
Finally it has happened, the LazyBears showed up to a game ready to play and it resulted in
a victory. The team living the year to this point blaming the bats for the poor offensive performances got their wish as D.J.
Goodson returned from Cape to rescue the LazyBears with a healthy dose of confidence and “good” bats. However,
the early offensive outburst in the bottom half of the first wasn’t quite as good as Bud Light’s first, leaving
the LazyBears down 7-6 after the first. A few runs here and there for both teams had the game at 11-7 Bud Light in the top
half of the 5th inning. A one-two-three inning top of the inning propelled the LazyBears into a hitting frenzy that ultimately
results in a pitching change for Bud Light, 14 runs, and 10 consecutive batters reaching base and scoring all with just one
out. The inning led the LazyBears to their first win at Red Bud in a short game, with the final score being 21-11. Big hitters
of the game were D.J. Goodson 3-4 2 2B, Sean Zollner 3-4 HR 3 RBI, Billy Schlimme 3-4, Kyle Schwartz 3-4, Tim Baum 3-3, and
Jeff Russell 1-2 HR 2 RBI. The win moves the LazyBears to 1-3 on the season (recorded season). We’ll see ya next week
on Tuesday when we play Fults.

June 3rd – LazyBears 21,
Bud Light 11
Finally it has happened, the LazyBears showed

May 13th
– Four Baggers 13, LazyBears 9
Scores not available for the previous two games, but
needless to say they weren't great as the LazyBears are now 0-2. Welcoming back several
members of the team from college the LazyBears looked to crack the win column with their new look lineup. As gametime arrived it appears as if the LazyBears would be unable to play due to the downpouring rain,
however the unwillingness of the umpires to show up another night the game was played on in a field only suitable for a demolition
derby. The field obviously played a major part in the game being sloppy and filled
with errors. While the field was in its “best” condition the Four
Baggers struck early getting out to a 9-3 lead after three innings. While the
rains continued the LazyBears bats and luck changed for the better as they were able to sneak line drives over and between
the heavy footed infielders to strike for four runs in the fourth to get the game to 9-7.
As the game entered the sixth with the same score some what could have been routine fly balls without the weather became
circus like doubles that finally lead to a hanging pitch being smacked out for a 3 run homer to make the game 13-7. The LazyBears were able to rally for 2 more in the ninth, but the rain hampered the comeback any farther
with the game ending 13-9. The loss moves the LazyBears to 0-3 on the season
and 0-2 in the division. The LazyBears will be back on the field on Tuesday,
May 20th looking for their first win.
May 20th
– No-Jacks 28, LazyBears 17
Finally a nice night
for a game and the LazyBears were ready to get out there and win a game. While
their attitude was good unfortunately their play was not as good, but that was mainly due to their opponent. The No-Jacks laced liners everywhere making routine plays harder than usual and it put the team down early
15-2. Followers of the LazyBears know there is a comeback in store and you would
be right as the LazyBears scored nine in the 4th vs. the No-Jacks two runs to make the game 17-11. The inning was highlighted by a three run, 2-out triple from Mike Zollner to lead to even more two out
hits. With renewed hope the LazyBears went out looking for a quick inning to
get back to hitting, but after an easy out the wheels fell right off the wagon to the tune of an 11 run inning for the No-Jacks
making the game 28-11. The bottom of the inning featured a grand-slam by Sean
Zollner, but it was not enough for the LazyBears to keep the game going as the game ended in 5-innings at 28-17. Notables were M. Zollner 2-4 3B 3 RBIs, S. Zollner 1-4 HR 4 RBIs, C. Brooks
3-4 2B HR 2 RBIs, and B. Schlimme 3-3 RBI. The LazyBears will be back in action
on Tuesday, May 27th at 8:00 (weather permitting).
The LazyBears will
also be in action June 27-29th in the Red Bud Fireman's Picnic Tournament, so come out and have a good time in RB and check
out the LazyBears too.
Game Reports 2007
LazyBears 2nd in State...Again
August 4th - The LazyBears returned to the state tournament this year looking to take that final step making them the state
champions.
LazyBears 9, Stank Nuggets (Crehans) 3 - The LazyBears showed up early for the 9AM game, but the early
start still zapped the LazyBears playing ability until the 3rd inning when they finally pushed 4 runs across the plate to
take a 4-2 lead. They held the lead for good all while tacking on insurance runs in the following innings to make the
game more comfortable. The win propelled the LazyBears into the noon game with the #1 seeded River Dogs.
LazyBears 10, River Dogs 7 - After the layover from the first game the LazyBears went out and had
a little breakfast. By a little breakfast I mean most of the team ate omelets, pancakes, and full fleged meals leaving
them just a bit full and sluggish for the next game. The lazyness became apparent when the River Dogs were able to jump
out to a early lead and continue to hold the lead for 5 innings, that is until the LazyBears finally digested breakfast and
began their hitting. Over the last 3 innings the LazyBears pushed 9 runs across the plate compared to the River Dogs
3 giving the LazyBears a big win that put them into the top of the winners bracket with a big game against the Crush looming
in 4 hours.
Crush 8, LazyBears 7 - In a back and forth game the LazyBears were not able to come out on top as
the Crush were the beneficiaries of one costly LazyBear miscue allowing a 1-run inning to become a 4-run inning. The
LazyBears fought back gallantly as they normally do pushing 3 runs across in the bottom of the 7th, but that rally left them
one run short in the end sending the LazyBears to 2-1. The loss also put the LazyBears into a position where they would
have to beat the Crush two times to win the title if they were to make it back to the title game(s).
LazyBears 19, River Dogs 3 - With the LazyBears only having to sit out one game in between their
loss to the Crush and this game it gave them just enough time to recouperate/not eat a meal that would make them more sluggish
than usual and the benefits were immediately seen. Within the first 3 innings the LazyBear onslaught used 15 hits to
score 12 quick runs and demoralize the River Dogs and make the game a walk in the park. The hitting was expected out
of the LazyBears it is just suprising that it took 4 games to see it, but late hitting is better than never and the LazyBears
marched into the title game(s) knowing they must beat the Crush twice for the title.
LazyBears 8, Crush 7 - While the hitting of the LazyBears was on against the River Dogs it quickly
turned off again versus the Crush. After four innings the LazyBears had built a comfortable 8-3 lead and were able to
hold the lead there until the 7th where the Crush struck for four runs and had a runner on with one out. However, the
LazyBear defense rose to the occassion acting like it was no big deal to record the final two outs without the runner scoring
sending the Class E State Final into a one game winner take all slugfest.
Crush 14, LazyBears 6 - It was not to be for the LazyBears as they were unable to find the needed offense
and defense in the game to decide the title. The Crush came out quickly to put the LazyBears in the hole and they just
kept on digging and the hits kept coming and the lazy flys kept falling. Nothing seemingly went right for the LazyBears
as their season came to an end a little unceremoniously.
While the season may have ended on a sour note the overall experience of the LazyBears was fantastic as usual. The
mix of guys from all over the south make this team an enjoyable team to watch and be around. I hope this was not the
last time the LazyBears are seen in action as this team; due to graduations and jobs players are in a state of "where the
hell am I going to be" and that makes the future uncertain. To clarify the team will likely go on they just have no
idea that the decisions they will make will still allow them to return for more season of glory with the LazyBears.

As I currently sit without a "real" job I have decided to write up the missing games
information to make th website slightly more complete, so here it goes.
July 13th - Skeeters 13, LazyBears 8
In the first matchup of the season between the two teams Skeeters jumped out to a
quick 6-0 lead. After a short rally to cut the score to 6-4 Skeeters all but ended the hopes of the LazyBear comeback
by blasting a 3-R HR in a 5 run inning to put the LazyBears down for good. Sean Zollner was 3-4 and Eric Walter
was 2-3 with a RBI
LazyBears 17 , Bud Light 15
After sitting out a game after the loss the LazyBears were back and ready to hit.
They scored early and often scoring 9 runs in the first 4 innings to give them a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Bud Light then rips off a scoring streak of their own putting up a snowman (8) in the bottom half to give them a comfortable
4 run lead at 13-9. It wouldn't be the LazyBears if there wasn't a comeback involved in the game as they quickly come
back with a ferocious rally of their own in the top of the 6th putting up 7 runs to regain the lead at 15-13. From there
the scoring was a few runs here and there allowing the LazyBears to ride into the finale on the night with a 17-15 win.
Big hitters were Brewer 4-4 2B 3 RBI, Bollmann 3-4 2B, 2 3B and 4 RBI, M. Zollner 3-4 HR and 3 RBI, S. Zollner 3-4 2 RBI.
LazyBears 14 , Skeeters 13
In the finale of the night starting at 9:30 the teams came out hot scoring at will
in the first two innings leaving the LazyBears with an early 10-8 advantage. With Rory Renk pitching for the LazyBears
in relief he shut down the Skeeters offense just enough to keep the light hitting LazyBears in the lead throughout, and then
win the game by the score of 14-13. Brooks lead the hitting charge with a 3-4 3B, HR, 3RBI with S. Zollner 3-4 HR, Schlimme
4-4 2 2B 3RBI, Mulholland 3-3 2B, and M. Zollner 2-4 3RBI.
July 20th - Undertakers 16 , LazyBears 2
In a recurring theme of the season the LazyBears did not come out to play in the
first game of the night putting out no worthwhile effort to talk about.
LazyBears 20 , Skeeters 7
In another recurring theme the LazyBears did come out to play in game 2 of the night
quickly finding the hitting that eluded them in game 1 pouncing out to the early 13-4 lead after 3 innings. The LazyBears
kept piling it on in the 4th scoring 6 more runs. Small hiccups in the fourth let the 15 run mercy rule slip away, but
the 10 run rule stayed intact ended the game at 20-7. Two perfect nights headline the hitters with Brewer and Goodson
both going 5-5 and Brooks added at 4-5 performance with a HR.
The current status of the LazyBears is 9-8 overall 9-6 in league with 5 games to
go in league play. They return to action Monday July 30th with a triple header starting at 6:30. The team will
meet in Chester at 6 to try to prepare the team for a quick start in game 1 and try to keep it rolling throughout. Tuesday
also is the last regular season night for the LazyBears in Chester as they play at 6:30 and 7:15.
The weekend brings the Class E State Tournament in Belleville at Citizens Park.
Times are still TBA, but come out to watch the LazyBears suprise the State Tournament teams again this year!
Tumultuous Tuesday Thoughts
June 26th – The LazyBears
returned to action versus Bud Light in game number one on the night. The LazyBears
were looking to take their 3rd game from Bud Light on the season giving them an edge in the league standings however,
that was not the case tonight. Sluggish LazyBear bats allowed Bud Light to take
an early 8-2 lead after two innings. The bats stayed in hibernation for the most
part until the second inning rolled around with the score being 9-5. The LazyBears
were the visitors and they quickly had two outs on them when the top of the order came up.
The top of the order did just as they should stringing together five hits in a row and scoring four runs all with two
outs to tie the game up at nine. The feeling of joy did not last however as Bud
Light returned the favor scoring three runs of their own on a deep blast by the number three hitter. The HR gave him six RBIs on just two swings of the bat, as he had a three run homer in the first as well. The 12-9 outcome left the LazyBears thinking about what could have been with some
more timely hits. The hitters of the night were Danny Brewer 3-4 2 RBIs and Andrew
Zollner 3-4 with an RBI.
Game two on the night pitted the LazyBears against the National Guard. Basically,
since I’m writing this 2 weeks after the game all I can remember about this game is the LazyBears scoring three runs
in the sixth to tie the game at eleven. The score remained the same until the
ninth inning where the bottom of LazyBear order got it going scoring three runs as a result of some timely two out hitting
to allow the LazyBears to edge out a 14-11 win. “It was nice to see the
urgency of the situation finally set into us in the 6th allowing us to send it to extras and eventually win the
game.” said Daniel Bollmann. “I wish we played with that type of
urgency all the time so we wouldn’t have to press so much at the end of all our games.”
The split sends the LazyBears to 5-4 (5-2 league play) on the season with two tough upcoming games versus Schmidts
and the Undertakers next Tuesday night.
July 3rd – The LazyBears
showed up tonight looking to come out of the gates hot and play with a bit of urgency to stop the late inning antacid antics
of their previous games. Hot was the key word of the night as everything was
hot; LazyBear bats, Schmidt’s bats, and the weather. Early inning hitting
got the game to an 8-7 Schmidt’s lead after just three innings. Unfortunately,
the hot hitting of the LazyBears took a quick break for two more innings allowing Schmidt’s to extend their lead to
12-7. That is again when the LazyBear bats came alive highlighted by three big
two out hits by Schlimme, Brooks, and Zollner. Zollner’s second HR on the
season was the final blow of the inning sending the game to the seventh all tied up at twelve. A quiet seventh lead to the game to the deciding eighth inning. In
the eighth the LazyBears were able to put up a run, but were unable to capitalize further on a one out bases loaded situation
in the inning, which left the door open for Schmidt’s who quickly scored their first two batters to end the game at
14-13. “Missing opportunities seems to be the theme of our season. We just can’t get what we need at the right time.” said Daniel Bollmann. Big hitters in the game were Bollmann 5-5 and scoring 3 runs, Brooks was 4-5 with
2 3Bs and 3 RBIs, and Sean Zollner, 4-5 with a HR.
As is typical with the LazyBears the previous performance was taken out to the field in the next game leaving me to
say only this about the game. We sucked.
Final score of 12-1 about summarizes it all for the readers. The LazyBears
recorded six hits in the game and were shortgamed for the first time this season. The
two losses on the night leave the LazyBears under .500 for the first time on the season at 5-6 and it also left an uneasy
feeling for the LazyBears because changes will have to be made to the team to get this thing turned around. The turning around will begin Tuesday night as the LazyBears return to action versus Skeeters Nest and
Bud Light.
Friday brings first league loss for the LazyBears
June 22nd - The LazyBears were back to their old tricks again
on Friday night as they took on the National Guard. In previous action the LazyBears and their decimated tournament
lineup lost to the Guard in a poor showing, however, with the LazyBears sporting their most potent lineup of the year a little
revenge was dished out.
The
first inning proved to be all the LazyBears needed as they were able to send 20 batters to the plate and score 16 runs on
14 hits and a few errors all before letting the Guard bat. In typical LazyBear fashion they then proceeded to shut up
shop and go through the motions for the rest of the game scoring only 2 more runs in a score shortened 18-6, 5 inning victory
for the LazyBears. Any effort to identify the top hitters of the game would take the entire page therefore only the
perfect hitters on the night are noted here. Brewer was 4-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs, Schlimme defunked himself by
going 3-3 with 2 RBIs, Renk was 3-3 with a 3B and an RBI, and Bollmann was 3-3 with 2 3Bs (mostly a result of poorly
played balls) and 2 RBIs. The team was all smiles during the first inning, but after the shutdown of the offense the
LazyBears began to spell doom for themselves as they took on the Undertakers in game 2 of the night.
The
impending doom was spelled out by the undertakers early as the LazyBear bats stayed relatively quiet. After the first
five innings of action the Undertakers held a comfortable 12-6 lead, but those who know the story of the LazyBears can only
believe that there was a comback in them and it did arise in the top of the 6th. The inning started with 6 consecutive
batters scoring runs and was followed by a two out rally that netted 2 more runs in the inning highlighted by a Brooks two
run single to give the LazyBears the lead 14-12. This time however the Undertakers struck back with two of their own
in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up at 14. It remained that way untl the 10th inning when the LazyBears were
able to get back to back to back hits to propel them to a one run lead heading into the bottom of the 10th. This is
where the magic stopped as the Undertakers capitalized with some clutch two out hitting of their own to score 2 in the bottom
of the inning sending the LazyBears to their first league loss on the season. Manager Daniel Bollmann said, "After coming
out lacidasically in the first few innings it is always good to see that we can rebound from a deficit against any team in
this league, but unfortunately we did not get any timely hitting in the extra innings and they (Undertakers) were able to
string those hits together late and that hurts. Rory pitched a great game for us and it is a shame we couldn't get him
his second win on the year, but this will give us perspective to use during the rest of the season as to how we must play
all our games." Top hitters in the game were Brewer 5-5 with 2 RBIs, Schlimme 5-6 with 3 RBIs, and Renk 3-3 with and
RBI.
Overall,
Brewer was 9-9, Renk was 6-6, and Schlimme was 8-9 on the night boosting each of their averages considerably. After
the Tuesday night games the full stats page will be updated to keep up with the games.
Friday
night's action leaves the LazyBears at 4-3 (4-1 league) and looking to rebound on Tuesday night the 26th against Skeeter's
Nest and Bud Light starting at 7:15. Speaking of revenge earlier it is quite certain that Bud Light is looking for it
against us since we are 2-0 on this season already, so the boys will be ready to rock when Tuesday night comes.
What's the Deal?
June 15th - The LazyBears were back in action under the tutilege
of Tim Baum replacing a otherwise commited Daniel Bollmann and the LB's did not miss a beat. In a repeat performance
of the second game of the season the LazyBears once again were able to defeat Bud Light 10-3. The game was a testimonial
to the play of the LazyBears as shown by excellent defense and pitching mixed in with some timely hitting.
From
what I understand Rory Renk had the hitters of Bud Light sending routine fly ball to the outfield and getting some help from
all of his infielders to give up only 3 runs to one of the most potent hitting teams in the league. In addition, late
notified fill-in starters for the LazyBears (Jeff Russell, Nathan Bleem, and Tyler Jeffers) all filled in admirably at their
positions making plays like they would have in their glory days at ole' Sparta HS.
As
for the second game on the night it appears as it will be rescheduled later in the year as a miscommunication sent Schmidt's
home before they could play their game versus the LazyBears. Time and date are TBA.
The
win leavs the LazyBears at 3-2 (3-0 league) with upcoming games on FRIDAY night instead
of the scheduled Tuesday night. The game times will remain the same it is only the date that has switched. The
schedule on the main page has been fixed to show this change. Let Daniel know of any eligibility problems for the upcoming
games.
We don't really want to talk about it."
June 10th - After a rainout of the two games on Friday the
Chester tournament became a huge letdown for the LazyBears as the hitting never really appeared in any of the games and
the defense all around was fairly shotty. They fell to the Undertakers in the first game 22-11 highlighted by an open
tryout for pitchers after Daniel Bollmann was shelled early. Then in the second the LazyBears were punchless as they
were out manuvered by the National Guard 11-4. The quote in the headline says it all.
The
LazyBears will hopefully reappear as a competitive team on Friday under the leadership of Tim Baum and Billy Schlimme.
Game times are located in the schedule section.
June 1st - On a normal, humid Friday night in Southern
Illinois the LazyBears returned to the field for the first time this year looking to start their season out on the right foot.
In years past the LazyBears have been notoriously slow starters to the season winning just 4 of their first 10
games of last year, but this year was a new beginning for the LazyBears as they brought home two big victories in
this their 4th season.
The
LazyBears started out the season against the Undertakers, last years 2nd place finishers in the league. The LazyBears
were the visiting team in the game and it didn't take them long to get on the board early with two runs on RBI singles
by Sean Zollner and Tim Baum. That lead did not last for long as the Undertakers responded in the bottom of the
inning with runs of their own. After recording the first out of the inning Daniel Bollmann gave up two
consecutive singles leaving two on for the cleanup hitter and as any cleanup hitter should do he took the first
pitch from Bollmann and deposited it over the left field fence. Chauncey Brooks traveled all the way back
to the fence on the homerun ball only to come up just a bit short on the catch, however he was able to get most of his
body over the fence causing him to flip over the fence. Brooks remained in the game, now just a bit more sore and angry
that he couldn't come up with the catch. Zeros were then put up by both teams for the next two innings aided
by a 5-2-3 double play with the bases loaded, that is until the LazyBears came up again in the 4th
and were able to push a run across on an sacrifice fly by Tim Baum tying the game. The score remained
the same until the 6th when the LazyBears went back to work recording 4 hits and a sacrifice fly extending the lead
to 5-3, but again in the bottom of the inning after Bollmann worked around the cleanup hitter the 5th batter in
the Undertakers lineup smashed the Undertakers second home run out to left once again causing Brooks to travel to the
wall, miss the catch, and fall over the fence for the 2nd time in the game. The blast tied the game up at 5 which
is where the score remained until the first extra frame. When Billy Schlimme walked to the plate with two
outs and banged an single up the middle to score Brooks with what turned out to the be the winning run after a quiet
bottom of the inning. Big hitters in the game were Sean Zollner 3-4, Mike Zollner 2-3, and Tim Baum 1-2 with 3
RBIs. The 6-5 win for the LazyBears was a good sign as it showed the LazyBears being retooled a bit from last
year are every bit as good and maybe even better than they were last year, but they still had one game left to
play on the night against last years league champions Bud Light.
The
second game of the night for each team did not start out well early for the LazyBears as the first batter of the game
skied a fly ball into right sending Mike Zollner in circles, which allowed the ball to drop and the batter to race
home scoring the first run of the game on the first pitch of the game. Bud Light was able to score another run
in that inning on another long homerun by the 3rd batter of the inning putting the LazyBears in a early 2-0 hole.
The LazyBears not phased by the early runs went ahead and put up 3 in the first with two clutch two out
hits by Norton and Baum. The score stayed 3-2 until the LazyBears got to the plate again in the bottom of the 2nd.
After a groundout to start the inning the LazyBears strung together 5 consecutive hits and a sacrifice to score
5 runs. The sacrifice looked to be the end to the scoring in the inning, however, Sean Zollner walked up to the
plate and with the encouragement of his coach belted his first homerun of the season deep over the left field fence giving
the LazyBears a 9-2 lead after two innings. In the third Bud Light scored 3 runs on a string of hits cutting the
lead to 9-5. The LazyBears then answered over the next two innings using Bud Light's quick innings to recover the runs
highlighted by the rare 2 RBI sac fly by Chauncey Brooks leaving the game at 12-5. Bud Light put up a small rally in
the 6th with 3 doubles, however with two outs the 10th batter in the lineup lined a single up the middle only to hit the runner
on second ending the threat in the inning. The LazyBears tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning and then
were able to quickly end the game with three outs in the 7th to give the LazyBears the 13-8 win. Big hitters of the
game were Brooks 2-4 with 4 RBIs, S. Zollner 2-4 HR, Norton 2-3 RBI, Walter 2-3 2 runs scored, and Bollmann 3-3
3 runs scored.
After
the game Bollmann had glowing reviews for the team after their first action of the season. " In the first game we may
not of hit like we will hopefully all season, but we played great defense and had timely hits to get the win. The second
game showed the team that they are still a great hitting force able to put up runs against any team in the league and it gives
us a great boost of confidence for the rest of the season. I am also very impressed with our new additions to the team
Eric (Walter), Benitez (Brown), and Mike (Zollner) all came in and contributed immediately showing that our scouting knew
what they were talking about when they recommended the players for the team."
With
the two wins on the night Bollmann also got above the .500 mark with his record for the first time in his career. He
is now 40-39 in his career.
The
LazyBears will return to action next Friday night the 8th at 7:15 and 8:00 against Skeeters Nest and National Guard looking
to extend their early season winning streak. They hope to see you all there too!
2007 LazyBear Season
April 15th - So it begins, the 4th season of the LazyBear
existance and they are as ready as they can be for the season. The LazyBears will likely return most of their core lineup
from last year with the exception of the left side of the infield and the catcher. 3B Kyle Schwartz, INF Deven Bleem,
and C Greg Adams will likely be at their respective schools finishing up their college experiences and SS DJ Goodson
will be rehabing from a blown knee suffered in a flag football game over the fall. On the bright side DJ will be along
with the team for the summer acting as the coach; offering up his insights and keeping the team at least half-assed focused
on the task at hand. These holes will have to be filled before the season begins and the holes will likely be filled
by a new crop of talent that has yet to be identified by the scouts.
Enough
with the problems that face the team in the upcoming season, there are many other things for the team to look forward to.
Every current member of the team will be at least starting their 3rd softball season and with the combination of expierence
and youth a great deal can be expected from this team.
In
addition, the fundrasing drive headed up by Tim Baum has been in full effect and has shown the same promise as before along
with new opportunities for the team to have the funding to play in multiple tournaments and only better their skills by playing
teams with greater talent.
The LazyBears will also play their regular season in Chester again with
a new format and a new league coordinator. The change in the coordinator will be a welcome sight as the LB's last year
lost several games to the weather and feel as if they weren't taken quite as seriously as they should have been. As
far as the new format goes there will be 6 teams, including the LazyBears, in the league setting up four games versus
each of the teams. Specation shows that the teams that will be returning are all the same as last year minus Lollie's.
What
can I say, I'm ready to go...and for that matter I'm ready to get back home and get this season started. Those feelings
have been echoed by many members of the team who are ready to begin and once again be a great team and have a great time.
We're ready. Are you?

LazyBears 2nd in Class E State!
August 14th - In the opener of the day for the LazyBears they
took on the Crush. The LazyBears were able to take an early lead of 1-0 on a
sac fly by Jeff Mulholland, scoring Jon Norton. The Crush then came back with
three runs in the second to give them a 3-1 lead. That lead held up until the
fourth when Renk led off with a double and was singled in by Bollmann. Bollmann
later scored on a bases loaded walk to tie the game at three. The game stayed
tied until the 8th when the Crush was able to push across a run after loading the bases to end the game. This loss put the LazyBears in the loser’s bracket forcing them to win eight consecutive games in
order to bring back the title. In addition, the LazyBears also lost their best
player D.J. Goodson to a sprained ankle. Hitters of the game for the LazyBears
were Jon Norton at 2-2 and Rory Renk with a 3-3 games respectively.
Game
Two on the day featured the LazyBears vs. The Beavers, a team from the Belleville area that was the same age as the LazyBears. The team also featured two of Billy Schlimme’s fraternity brothers, heightening
the meaning of the game for all three players. The game started off harmless
enough with no team scoring until the 3rd when the LazyBears loaded the bases on two singles and a walk allowing
the top of the order to score those runs on sacrifice flies and three singles. In
the bottom half of the inning the Beavers responded by scoring a run of their own to cut the LazyBears lead to 4-1. The LazyBears were able to push across another run in the 5th to make the lead 5-1. The Beavers again responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to trim the lead to 5-4. With one out in the 6th the LazyBears got rolling again by getting two
on for Tim Baum who tripled in two and then scored himself on a single by Bollmann, allowing the LazyBears to get all the
cushion they needed as they won the game 8-6. Big Hitter of this game was D.J.
Goodson, sprained ankle and all, going 4-4 with a double in there too. Renk,
Bollmann, and Brooks were all 2-3 as well. The win in game two on the day allowed
the LazyBears to play at 7:00 for the right to get to Sunday tournament play.
In
the aforementioned game the LazyBears were able to again jump out on top of the Freedom Riders, a team from Wamac, who defeated
the LazyBears in the Chester qualifier 18-17. Since that LazyBear team was a shell of itself the current roster was looking for a little redemption. They were able to exact that redemption by defeating the Freedom Riders 8-6. The stats for the game are sketchy at best, but I was able to read Billy Schlimme
going 2-3 with a triple. The big news of the game was that after the LazyBears
had a Walt Frazier like performance, by D.J. Goodson in the previous game, found out that he would be unable to play for the
rest of the tournament. Because of his situation D.J. became the team’s
coach and motivator for the rest of the tournament.
With
the LazyBears having made it through the loser’s bracket to Sunday there were many situations that could unfold for
the LazyBears. They could lose any game at any time and be done or could continue
on playing every hour in the quest for the championship.
Game
four, the first game on Sunday, the LazyBears took on the Ryders from Granite City. Again the LazyBears started out slow not scoring until the 3rd inning when
they put up four runs to counter the early run scored by the Ryders, to give the LazyBears a lead of 4-1. The Ryders came back with three runs again in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 4-4. The Ryders then took the lead in the bottom of the 4th scoring a run to regain their lead at
5-4. The LazyBears were not through however scoring three in the 5th
and 1 in the 7th to give enough of a cushion at 8-5 for the bottom of the 7th. The Ryders were able to put a scare into the LazyBears by scoring two runs with only one out however they
were able to retire the last two batters without incident ending the game at 8-7 in favor of the LazyBears. Big Hitters were Sean Zollner 4-4, Jon Norton 3-4 and Chauncey
Brooks 3-4.
The
win led to the LazyBears playing the next game only ten minutes following the previous one, this time against the Bad Boys
from Wood River. Watching this team on the previous day the LazyBears knew they were going to have
to score some runs to hang with this team, and that is just what the LazyBears did.
They scored eight runs in the first four innings to give them an early lead of 8-5 after four innings. Eight runs would have done it for any of the previous games played, but the LazyBears knew it would not
be enough. Therefore, in the 6th the LazyBears got the bats going
after one out in the inning recording six consecutive hits and plating five runs to extend the lead to 13-5. The Bad Boys scored three in their half to make the game interesting at 13-8, but the LazyBear bats heated
up again with TEN consecutive batters reaching base on nine hits and a walk to extend the lead to 20-8. During that inning a blowup by the coach of the Bad Boys also put a break in the inning for a few minutes
as he was tossed from the game and the park. That put an interesting turn on
the game for the LazyBears, but they were already in control of that game and went on to the victory by a score of 20-11. Big hitters in the game were Schlimme 4-5 with a HR and four runs scored, and Andrew
Norton 4-5 with three runs scored.
Game
six was then on the horizon for the LazyBears against the Mighty Ducks, a team they had played last year and defeated and
who also had played two games on the day already. This game didn’t start
off like most since the LazyBears were able to capitalize in the first two inning because of timely hitting and some errors
by the Mighty Ducks to take a 9-1 lead after two. The LazyBears did not take
their foot off the gas as they continued to score run after runs recording another consecutive hit streak of six batters allowing
them to push across another six runs by the fifth inning allowing the LazyBears to end the game in five innings by the score
of 16-6. The game might have lasted longer since the Mighty Ducks were able to
score three in the bottom of the fifth to get the lead back to ten, but a stab of a line drive by Daniel Bollmann ended the
game at that point. Big Hitters in that game were Brooks 3-3 and Mulholland 3-4. The victory in this game sealed the deal that the LazyBears would finish in the top
three which was their goal after the Game one loss to the Crush.
With
their bats still hot the LazyBears prepared for their fourth game of the day against Three B Drywall, looking to earn a higher
place in the tournament. The hot bats played a large part in the game as the
LazyBears again scored early and often against Three B Drywall putting up three in the 1st on five hits and four
in the 3rd on five more hits. The four run 3rd was sparked
by an inning ending line drive at Bollmann who caught it and then spiked it to the ground only to be followed by Billy Schlimme
doing the same to get the team’s emotion running high. The lead of 7-0
after the first three innings held up until the 5th when Three B scored two in the 5th and three in
the 6th to narrow the lead to 7-5. The LazyBear bats remained in hibernation
after the first two innings scoring only those seven early runs forcing a seventh inning showdown. After the first batter
grounded out three consecutive singles were recorded and a force out at second scored a run leaving runners on first on third
(the tying run) with two outs. The first pitch out of Bollmann’s hand was
a hot shot back at him that he speared and spiked to the ground in victory sending the LazyBears to the championship game(s).
The
championship game was fifth game of the day for the LazyBears and it was their toughest test yet against SEMO Fence, a team
of seasoned veterans from Cape, who had demolished all they played in the tournament already. The start of the game looked like it would be no different this time for SEMO against
the LazyBears, scoring seven early runs to put the LazyBears in a large, early hole.
The LazyBears showing lots of heart scored six runs after six innings to make the game 10-6. The last inning of the game could have been all for the LazyBears, but the tremendous streak that they
were riding was not about to end right there. The LazyBears struck for four runs
to tie the game on five hits and an error to send the game to extras after a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning. However, the magic finally ran out as SEMO hacked out three hits to push the winning run across the plate
to end the game at 11-10 in eight innings giving SEMO the title.
Even
with the loss the LazyBears felt they had accomplished something over the weekend. They
were able to showcase their talents to the area. The softball community was able
to see the stellar defense put on by the LazyBears whether it was the Greg Maddux like pitching defense of Daniel Bollmann,
the Jim Edmonds like catches of Sean Zollner, the lasers from the outfield to hose down runners at the bases by Danny Brewer
and Tim Baum, the massive range showed by Chauncey Brooks and Jeff Mulholland, and the stellar glove work by all the members
of the infield (Billy Schlimme, Rory Renk, Jon Norton, Andrew Norton, and Greg Adams.
The LazyBear offense, although enigmatic, made people say that if the LazyBears played like the wanted to win the game
they could win any game they wanted.
In
all, most everyone there was impressed by the effort put out by the LazyBears and by the way in which they were competitive
at all times by having the most fun they could have at the same time. Maybe the
carefree attitude of the LazyBears is why people think we don’t try, but if you ask anyone on the team they wouldn’t
have the mindset of the team any other way. For that reason I have been lucky
to be part of this team for its existence and hope to continue to be a huge part of it in the future.
The
play of the LazyBears has also opened up a berth for the LazyBears in the National Tournament held at Fort Knox, Kentucky on Sept. 2-4. The season may not be over for the LazyBears if they can field a team they will head to Kentucky to make some more eyes open to see the LazyBears in action!
Update on the status of the season and what is to come
August 6th - This may be a long time in coming and sorry for the frustration of all our readers, but the frustration
of the season is currently being felt by the Lazybears. After a series of rainouts that were questionable calls
at best, the LazyBears have been looking into the possibility of rescheduling the games over this last week of available softball.
However, the league commisioner has not been able to be reached for over two weeks and has put out no effort to
reschedule these games. According to players and fans on other teams we were supposively contacted last week
to play games, but again no calls. What is even worse is that we have been told that the commish was able
to contact us and that we would not be able to field a team during those days. These are discouraging
words not only for us, but for the rest of the league because of the likelyhood that these games will never be rescheduled.
Therefore, the LazyBears will hold hitting practice twice in the upcoming week to prepare for the State tournament
on Aug 12-13th in Red Bud. A Wednesday and a Thursday hitting practice will be held to get the team back into hitting
shape as they try to make a run at a state title after a prolonged 3 week layoff. Members of the team
will be contacted this week as to times for the practice. If there are any questions please contact Daniel
as he is the one making the plans.
LazyBears return to form, sweep on Friday
July 7th - The LazyBears returned to their weekly action to take on Skeeter's Nest and Git-R-Done
and also looking to get back on the winning track. The LazyBears also were sporting their new uniforms, a sweet black
T with the LB logo and slogan on the shirt. *Check out the History and Records page for a look*
In game one against Skeeter's Nest the LazyBears jumped on Skeeter's in a hurry scoring 7 in the first to take an early
lead. The LazyBears were able to keep the lead large throughout most of the game until the 7th when Skeeter's was ablet
close a 5 run lead to 2. After 4 consecutive singles scored 2 Skeeters a 6-4-3 twin killing pretty much ended the
rally and the game 12-10 in favor of the LazyBears. The win earned Kyle Schwartz his first win on the year as pitcher
for the new look LazyBears.
After the LazyBears had a game off in between their next game they returned right back to form scoring early and often
against Git-R-Done scoring in every inning of the game. The LazyBears didn't play with all of their concentration making
a few errors in the field allowing Git-R-Done to close the gap to 7 runs at one point, but in the end the LazyBears were able
to defeat them in 5 innings by a score of 17-7. Big hitter on the day was DJ Goodson going 11-12 on the night and
increasing his team best batting average to around .800.
The LazyBears get to return to action on a Friday again playing Skeeter's Nest in the first game at 7:15 and the Lumberjacks
at 8:45 for the second game. It is also Billy Schlimme night for the LazyBears as he will be celebrating his 22nd birthday
with his buddies, so make sure to wish him a good one.
LazyBears
impress at S'ville 3K
On a normal July 4th in S. Illinois the LazyBears were out in force, not to play softball, but rather run in the
Firecracker 3K before the S'ville 4th of July parade. Last year six LazyBears ran in the race and finished the
race winded, but proud. This year the LazyBears were looking for a much better showing in the race after last years
close to the back finish. They did not disappoint as the LazyBear pack finished the race in times ranging from 14:30
to 14:39. Their times were good enough to earn them 109-118 places in the race that featured 207 participants.
"I feel good about how we ran together today. I was very proud of my teammates who unselfishly dropped back 30 feet
to pick me up (Daniel) when I was slightly lagging behind. I was also impressed with Deven Bleem picking himself up
off the couch to finish a close second in the pack of us."
What a day for the LazyBears, check out the pics of us as they become available to us.
LazyBears Struggle, Lose Two
The LazyBears returned to play on Tuesday to play the two top teams in the league Bud Light and the Undertakers and fell
to both on the night.
The LazyBears played game one against Bud Light and fell 7-4. The LazyBears scored two quick runs in the first
to get out to a 2-0 lead, but that lead was short lived as Bud Light regained the lead 3-2 on a bomb hit over the scoreboard
by Eric Caby. Bud Light then stretched the lead to 7-2 over the next 5 innings while the LazyBears continued to make
unproductive outs. The LazyBears were able to get two across the plate in the final inning, but it was too little too
late as Bud Light finished them off by a score of 7-4.
In game two the LazyBears were looking for a little redemption on the night after having played a subpar game in game
one. The LazyBears put on their hitting shoes in inning one batting through the lineup scoring 8 runs in the first
to take a commanding early lead. The LazyBears knew that they must keep scoring runs to keep the lead, but
they were in for a rude awakening as the Undertakers came out and put up 15 runs of their own in the first.
At the end of the first inning the score of the game was 15-8 in favor of the Undertakers. Kyle Schwartz came
in to relieve Daniel Bollmann after the first and was able to keep the Undertakers down only allowing
2 more runs over the next 5 innings. The LazyBears were able to mount a strong seventh inning comeback scoring 5
times in the bottom of the inning all before recording an out, to make the score 17-16. Rory Renk then singled
before Tim Baum hit a long fly ball to the track that was caught over-the-shoulder by the LF, Renk was then subsequently
thrown out at first because he "left early". "The only umpire was apparently watching the runner instead of the
catch to call him out!," exclaimed one fan. The LazyBears also agreed with the fans, "Unbelieveable, how could
the umpire let the game end like this." "He would have made it to second without a throw, that is what kills
me about this," said the LazyBears. Upset the LazyBears went home without a win on Tuesday.
The LazyBears return to action on Friday the 7th to play Skeeter's Nest and Git-R-Done at 6:30 and 8:00
for their second Friday game of the year.
LazyBears Split in Sweltering Heat
June 20th - The LazyBears returned to their weekly Tuesday night action to take on Lollie's and the Lumberjacks; except
this night was like no other to this date because of the temperature. At gametime the LazyBears took the field with
the temperature heating up to 95, which spelled problems for the LazyBears.
In game one against Lollie's the LazyBears fell 6-4. This was the same Lollie's team that the LazyBears had beaten
by 10 runs each of the first two times this year. The main culprit of the night was the heat making the LazyBears more
lackadaisical
than usual causing the LB's to not come through in the clutch on many occasions. "The hitting on the day was good however
the clutch hits were not there, but I love the way Kyle Schwartz pitched today for us." said Daniel Bollmann. Kyle
Schwartz took the loss in this game, but with the way he pitched he deserved a win. The hitting star of the game
was Danny Brewer going 4-4; however he was picked off in a run-down late in the game prompting Tyson Bradley to blurt out
"Dumbass" all the way from Carbondale.
The LazyBears
were then forced to wait through one game before they played their nightcap and that was likely the best thing that could
have happened for the LazyBears. They came out with a fire, mostly due to the fact that that the sun went down and the
temperature dropped into the 80's, and scored 8 runs in the frist 3 innings to get out to an early 8-0 lead. The LazyBears
kept up the pace adding 6 more runs in the next two innings and all the Lumberjacks could counter with was 3 in those two
innings making the game a 5 inning short game with the score of 14-3. Daniel Bollmann returned to the mound in game
two to shut down the Lumberjacks with his "flat" ball prompting all types of complaints from the opposition. "The umps
keep calling it a strike, so I'm gonna keep throwing it," said Daniel. There were mulitple big hitters of the
game; Jon Norton 4-4, Danny Brewer 3-4 3 RBIs, and Billy Schlimme 3-4 2 RBIs.
The LazyBears
willl return to action, you guessed it, on Tuesday June 27th at 6:30 and 7:15 to face off with Bud Light and the Undertakers.
Lazybears Git-R-Done in game one; get overtaken by Undertaker's late rally
Tuesday - On the return to Chester's Mens League after a disappointing
and questionable ending to the State Qualifier tourney on last Saturaday, the LB's split two games.
The first game proved to be a statement for the LazyBears as they
came out swinging bats fueled by tournament frustrations against the team Git-R-Done. The LB's jumped out to a quick
7-0 lead after the 2 innings, holding their lead to 8-3 untill the 6th inning when they unleased a barrage of softballs
into the gaps, scoring 9 more in the final two innings of the game, cruising to a 17-4 win. The big hitters for the LazyBears were DJ Goodson
who went 4-5 with a 2B and 4 RBI's. and Kyle Schwartz who also went 4-5 with a 2B, 2 3B's, and 4 RBI's.
The second game of the night against the Undertakers started out
the same as the first, with the LB's jumping to a quick 8-0 lead after 3 innings. The Undertakers began to come
alive scoring 4 in the top of the 4th, and the LBears answered back with 6 of their own in the bottom of the
4th. In the 6th, with a score of 17-9, the LazyBears began to slowly lose their grasp of their second victory
on the night. The Undertakers hammered out 7 runs in the top of the 6th, while the LB's could only muster 1 run
in the bottom. In the 7th and final inning, the Undertakers again scored at will, putting a 6 spot up, and
taking the lead from the LazyBears. In their final at bat, the LB's couldn't come up with the needed four
runs despite loading the bases in the bottom of the 7th, losing 22 -18 to the formidable Undertakers. Leading batsmen
for the LazyBears were Rory Renk who went 5-5 with 2 RBI's, DJ Goodson 4-5 with a 2B, 3B, and 2 RBI's, and Sean Zollner who
went 4-5 with 2 RBI's.
The LazyBears return to action on Tuesday, June 20th against
Lollies and Dizzie's at 6:30 and 8:00 in Chester.
LazyBears Leave Tourney Empty-Handed
June 10th - The LazyBears went to Chester to play in the State qualifing tournament
held by their league and they went looking for nothing less than the title. However, their chances at the title were
taken away from them by one inning and one umpire.
In the first game of the day the LazyBears took on Skeeter's Nest and came
out on top 15-6. The LazyBears came out sluggish going down 6-1 early. The LazyBears recovered to tie the game
at 6-6 going into the top of the seventh. This is where the LazyBears exploded scoring 9 unanswered runs on Skeeter's
thanks to the hitting of the entire team in the inning. "What happened I guess was that the guys found out it was after
11 and that means that they can play since we never win games that start in the morning," said Bollmann. Big hitters
on the day were Schlimme and Schwartz going 4-4 with 2 and 4 RBI's respectively. Bollmann also added 4 RBI's while going
3-4 too.
The win over Skeeter's led the LazyBears into the next game against the Freedom
Riders from Centralia. The mysique of the team from Centralia soon wore off as the LazyBears exploded in the first 3
innings scoring 14 runs to get out to an early and seeming insurmountable lead of 15-4. However, the LazyBears did not
see the meltdown that was coming up for them in the 6th inning. Under the heat the LazyBears felt the wrath of a team
that hadn't hit much all day, but finally exploded scoring 14 runs in that inning to take a 18-14 lead. The LazyBears
didn't quit however and came back in the top of the 7th and tie the game at 18-18 thanks to a good deal of timely hitting
with 2 outs. It turned out that the comeback was for naught since the LazyBears couldn't come up with a diving catch
in the outfield to keep the game tied; sending the LazyBears to 1-1 on the day.
The final game of the day was against Keggler's Korner also from Centralia.
The heat of the day wore on the LazyBears as they only scored one run before the 6th inning causing them to fall into a hole
of 6-1. The LazyBears showing the same spirit as they did in the game before rallied in the next two innings scoring
4 in the sixth and 2 in the seventh to take a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh. This is where the questionable
umpiring began to cost the LazyBears. Some questionable balls and strikes were called/not called causing the LazyBears
to relinquish the lead and send the game to the 8th all tied at 7-7. The balls and strikes theme was similar in the
8th, but the LazyBears were able to overcome in that inning sending it to the 9th at 7-7. The LazyBears came out in
the ninth and were able to manufacture a run to take a lead into the bottom of the inning. The Korner then proceeded
to put the leadoff batter on and get him to second with two outs. The next pitch was hit out to center where Danny Brewer
threw a strike to the catcher Matt Guebert who applied the tag on the runner to only apparently gun down the runner.
However, the umpire's questionable calls once again came back to shoot down the LazyBears as he called the runner safe.
The LazyBears left the field dejected and slighted of a chance to win the tourney as a win in that game would have given them
the title. "He missed a call and he missed it badly. I don't wanna say that cost us the game, but that was the
biggest play in the game and it turned out that the umpire decided the game and not the two teams. That is a shame,"
said Daniel Bollmann.
The LazyBears went 1-2 in the tourney, but they did get some more experience
in the process and they look forward to meeting up with these teams again in the future.
The LazyBears return to the Chester Men's League regular season on Tuesday
the 13th with games at 8:00 and 8:45 against Git-R-Done and The Undertakers.
LazyBears lick Lollie's and Cut Down Lumberjacks
June 6th - The LazyBears returned to action after a week off and hit the field
in stride as they took on Lollie's Cafe and the Lumberjacks (formerly Dizzie's). The LazyBears pulled out two wins tonight
on the backing of solid all around performances and one outstanding player performance by Jeff Beez. Beez is a member
of Kelsey's Desperados, a team out of Oran, Missouri, and a good friend of DJ Goodson. Beez was filling in tonight for
the shorthanded LazyBears, and filled in he did very nicely over the course of the night.
In the first game of the night the LazyBears were matched up against Lollie's.
The LB's struck early for 4 runs, 3 of which scored on Jeff Beez's homerun. The LazyBears had a few defensive lapses
causing a few extra bases to be taken resulting in the lead to be cut to 4-2. After a few innings of scoreless ball
the LazyBears got back on track with another Beez homerun and another maufactured run in the 4th to extend the lead to 6-2.
The LazyBears came up in the bottom of the fifth with the same lead and then really turned it on scoring 6 more runs in that
inning to cause a short game. The inning was put together with three clutch hits from Bollmann, Brewer, and Goodson
all resulting in 2 RBI's. The final score of the game was 12-2 in five innings. The hitter of the night in game
one was definately Beez going 3-3 with 2 HR's and a single; he also plated 4 runs and scored twice himself.
In the second game of the night the LazyBears took on the Lumberjacks.
The LB's lost a close game to the Lumberjacks earlier and were looking to get back to even against them in the series.
The game did not start off the way the LazyBears would have liked, because
with pleanty of hitting and some questionable defense the LazyBears found themselves down 8-1 after three innings. However,
things began to change in the 4th as the LazyBears manufactured a run on a sac fly to get things going into the 5th.
The LazyBears were saddled with two quick outs however 5 consecutive hits scored three runs and brought Beez to the plate
again. Beez proceeded to launch a ball over the wall in right field to tie up the game at 8-8. With the new found
energy the LazyBears went out and put up blanks in the next two frames for the Lumberjacks and were acutally able to take a
one run lead into the 7th. In the top of the seventh the LazyBears scored two more on RBI hits by Mulholland and Renk
to extend the lead to three. In the bottom of the inning the LazyBears faced a tough task as they had to retire the
top of the Lumberjacks order which had recorded 10 hits already on the night. After the leadoff man reached on a single,
a fly out was brought in by Renk. This turned out to be huge since the next batter launched his 2nd homerun of the night
deep over the left-centerfield fence to close the lead to one. The next batter then doubled which looked like problems
for the LazyBears, but they were able to induce a groundball which Tony Schenk made a great play to retire the batter and
then Bollmann induced a flyball to Renk to end the game with the score 11-10. The big hitters in this game were Beez
going 2-3 with the game tying homerun and three RBI's and also D.J. Goodson going 4-4 to improve his team leading average
to .678.
The LazyBears look to continue the winning as they return to action on Saturday
at the Cohen fields in Chester to play in a round robin tournament. The action gets underway at 10 with the LB's facing
off against Skeeter's Nest in the opener. The LB's will also play two teams from the Centralia area in other games during
the day, the schedule will be added as soon as it becomes known.
They will continue with the regular season next Tuesday the 13th against Git-R-Done
and the Undertakers at 8:00 and 8:45 respectively. Hope to see ya'll out at the ballpark sometime soon!
Split Stops LazyBear's Losing Streak
May 30th - The LazyBears returned to action on the final night of four consecutive
playing days and salvaged a split on the night to send their record to 3-5.
In the first game the LazyBears took on Bud Light and once again were mastered
by the pitching of Bud Light, who held the LazyBears to 9 hits. The LazyBears got on the board first to go up 1-0 early,
but that was short lived as in the 2nd inning Bud Light took the lead for good on their way to a 7-2 victory. The LazyBears
were paced by D.J. Goodson's 2-3 and Danny Brewer's 2-4 performances.
Looking to step it up in game two the LazyBears took on the Skeeter's Nest.
The LazyBears jumped out early taking a 9-1 on lots of good timely hitting. However, in typical LazyBear fashion they
"packed up shop" and forgot to play the next few innings as defensive miscues, poor pitching, and less than stellar hitting
gave the lead right back to Skeeter's Nest at 14-13 going into the bottom of the 7th. The LazyBears were led off that
inning by three consecutive singles that loaded the bases. After a fly out and and sac fly the LazyBears had the game
tied with two outs when "Mr. May" Billy Schlimme came to the plate and singled home the winning run to end the game at 15-14.
"He was clutch, enough said," said Deven Bleem. While Billy Schlimme was clutch in this game Tim Baum's accomplishments
did not go unrecoginized as he was 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks and he scored all 4 times he reached the plate.
The LazyBears get a Friday night off as they prepared for 3 consecutive weeks
of playing on Tuesday night. They start off on July 6th with Lollie's and Dizzie's at 6:30 and 7:15. The LazyBears
will also participate in the Chester State qualifier on June 10th to play for a berth in the state tournament. Come
out and check out the LazyBears soon!
LazyBears Bust Out of Early Season Slide in a Big Way
May 23rd
– After two tough losses for the LazyBears on Tuesday the 17th, they look to get the first win of the
season against their rival Lollie’s Café out of the thriving metropolis of Percy.
The LazyBears
struck early as they were the visitors and were able to put up a quick 7 spot in the first where everyone in the lineup batted
in the inning and ended on the 13th batter of the inning leaving the bases loaded and the LB’s hungry for
more. After a quick bottom of the inning the LazyBears picked up right where
they left off scoring 5 more runs to make the score 12-1 after two innings. The
hitting didn’t stop there as the LB’s went on to score 9 more runs in the next two innings to end in a mercy rule
shortened game. The final score of the game was 21-6 in 4 innings.
The star
hitters of the game are…well the whole team as everyone on the team recorded a hit and an RBI. Kyle Schwartz deserves a note of respect since he did hit an inside the park homerun in the game which
put him in the team lead for HR on the season *not for long*.
The LazyBears
got a game off in between their next game against Git-R-Done, in which they didn’t miss a step. The LazyBears came out hot again scoring 5 runs in the first and 4 more in the second to start out hot
again with the score 9-1 after two. After that the boys shut-r-down fittingly
mustering 5 more runs in the next two innings to leave the game at 14-1 into the top of the fifth. With some shotty pitching and defense the shortgame was threatened to be eliminated however when it was
crunch time (and also well after 10 o’clock) the LazyBears put the hammer down and shut the door on Git-R-Done, with
a final score of 14-4.
The hitting
stars of this game were the two men now tied with Schwartz for the HR lead; Billy Schlimme and Steve Jarvis. Schlimme laced a liner over the RF wall to be followed 2 batters later by Jarvis who sent a towering shot
out to LF. The LazyBears would like to thank Steve Jarvis for his service today
as he was “called up” from SEMO to play an emergency role with the LazyBears as some players were laid up with
injuries and other obligations. With his performance tonight it is not unlikely
that Steve Jarvis will be seen again for the LazyBears.
The LazyBears
play again on Friday May 25th at 6:30 and 7:15 against Skeeter’s Nest and The Undertakers. Come out and see the LB’s on their quest for the title all year long!
Lazy Bears
Back In Action at INDY, Bats Stay in Hibernation
April
4th - On a cold, windy morning in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Lazy Bears
traveled the ten minute drive to the Midwest Sports Complex where they opened up the 2006 season. On arrival, they boys
of summer saw the pinnacle of the Softball Culture. The 30th annual McCracken Tournament featured a numerous of
experienced teams and players who looked to be tough compaction for the Lazy Bears.
The 10
a.m. matchup against Bosco's from Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
was a tough challenge for the LB's. This was the first game action that the Lazy Bears have seen since their 5th
place finish at the State Tournament last August. In the 1st, Bosco's jumped on top with 2 runs as the Lazy Bears defense
battled sloppy field conditions. But in true Lazy Bear fashion, they came back into the dugout and answered back with
3 runs to take the lead. Goodson led things off with a walk while Norton doubled which scored Goodson on a throwing
error. Next, Brewer doubled as well scoring Norton giving him the first RBI on the season. Schlimme then came up and
hit a hard single scoring Brewer giving the Lazy Bears a 3-2 lead. Things slowed down in the 2nd inning with the LB defense
holding strong keeping Bosco's scoreless. Dan Bollmann had an RBI himself in the 2nd when he singled in Rory Renk to expand
the lead to 4-2.
Things
then went sour for the Lazy Bears as the Bosco's heated up their bats and scored 14 runs in the next 4 innings while holding
the LB's to only 2 more runs. Those runs came in the bottom of 6th when Rory Renk singled in Jon Norton on his walk and Bollmann
singled in Baum on his single to make it a final score of 16-6. The Lazy Bears then retired for lunch and rest for their
next match up against a team called MTC.
The Game
against MTC was also something not to be talked about at length as the LazyBears scored 6 runs only to see their lead evaporate
into a tie that sent the teams to the 8th inning where MTC put 3 quick ones on the board and left the LazyBears
scrambling. The LazyBears were only able to get another run in the 8th
which gave them their second and final loss in the double elimination tournament. Stats
for the game were lost “somehow” and are not recorded.
The LazyBears
look to recover in about 5 weeks when they begin their 3rd season in the Chester Men’s Softball league where
their goal is to win the league and be the best team in class E in S. Illinois.
2005 Game Reports
Lazy Bears lose control in the 6th, Rest of Tourney
gets Washed Away
May 16- Weekend
rains kept the Lazy Bears out of action and unable to avenge the loss handed to them by Lollie's Cafe on Friday
night. Opening Day came as a disappointment for the Lazy Bears players and fans. Up 3-1 coming into
the 6th inning, Lollie's went on to score 7 runs off Lazy Bears errors. The Lazy Bears came into hit in the bottom of
the 6th and 7th innings and managed to score no runs which made it a final of 8-3 Lollie's Cafe. "Bingo, Bango,
Bongo!," said Kyle Schwartz as Lollie's scored 7 unanswered runs. The Lazy Bears did have a productive
night with 8 out of 10 batters having a hit in the game. It looks as if the break from school gave Billy Schlimme time to
refocus on his game and take it to a new level. Schlimme led the Lazy Bears going 2 for 3. Schlimme was
only a DH that night and commented that he enjoyed being on the bench during defense. "It gives me time to analyze
my last at bat and to focus on the next one," said Schlimme.
On the defensive
side, D.J. Goodson made a spectacular play at the 6 spot by making a play to his right in the hole, and
turning, jumping, and throwing all at the same time to get the force out at second. Other than Goodson gem, the
Lazy Bears made crucial errors in the 6th to help Lollie's score their 7 runs. Hopefully this was
only first game jitters and not something that will become a habit for the team.
With the first round of the opening tourney in the books, weekend rains
postponed the tourney to a later time in the season. Even though the games were cancelled, some players didn't
take the day off Sunday. Sunday gave some players a chance to fix some of the hitting and fielding problems
that were seen on Friday night. “In order to get better, we can’t
take days off. We have to get our hitting where it needs to be so we can put
more runs on the board,” said player/manager Dan Bollmann. Next game for
the Lazy Bears is May 17th at 7:15, against whom else other than Lollie’s Café.
Lazy Bears, Bit by Skeeter's, Licked by Lollie's
May
19- Lazy Bear players and fans were let down as the young team dropped two games on Tuesday.
For the first game the Lazy Bears played their archrival, Lollie's Cafe, for the second straight week and lost once
again. The Lazy Bears started off hot scoring 5 runs in three innings and kept
a "goose egg" on the scoreboard for Lollie's. That is until the 6th, when Lollie's
found a hole in the defense and caused the Lazy Bears, yet again, to make crucial errors to blow the game. Second baseman, Tony Schenk, was picked at all day when Lollie's took the ball the other way to let Schenk
make plays. Lollie's ended up scoring 8 runs in the 6th to capture an 8-5 win. Leading the team in hitting for the first game was the red hot Billy Schilmme, who
is 6 for 9 on the year.
The second game against Skeeter's Nest caused more heartbreak for
the Lazy Bears. Skeeter's Nest took advantage of questionable balls and strikes
from the umpire to score 11 runs in 5 innings. In the bottom of the 5th, the
Lazy Bears showed some sort of life by scoring 4 runs and 3 more in the 6th. Final
score to Skeeter's was 11-7, making the Lazy Bears 0-3 Lazy Bear defense
held strong in this game with D.J. Goodson making his routine web gem every night and making no errors. Clutch hitters in
the game were D.J. Goodson going 3 for 4 and Kyle Schwartz and rookie Bob Rednour going 2 for 3.
Next Game for the Lazy
Bears is Friday May 20th against the Eagles at 6:30 and the Undertakers at 7:15.
Fifth Time's
a Charm, Lazy Bears get First Win
June 4- Tuesday
night proved there was nothing "Lazy," about the 0 and 4 Lazy Bears. The win-less
Lazy Bears squeaked out the first win of the year. Playing against their hated
rival, Lollie's Cafe, the Lazy Bears scored only 5 runs, but held their opponent to a season low 4 runs. The LB's jumped on top scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Defense
held Lollie's scoreless until the top of the 6th when they scored all 4 runs to make it even.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Lazy Bears scored 1 more to take back the lead to hold off the Percy cafe to take the
first victory of the season. Hitting was no problem for the LB's on Tuesday. Seven players had a multi-hit game, which is uncommon for the team's lineup.
For the second
game of the double header, the Lazy Bears played the always-dominant Dizzie's Cafe from Steelville, Illinois. The Lazy Bears had no answer to their opponents’ powerful bats. Dizzie's scored 7 fast runs in 2
innings and held the Lazy Bears to only 3. Dizzie's kept piling it on by hammering
pitch after pitch to short game the LB's in 5 innings of a score of 13-3. One
good note about the 10 run loss is the Lazy Bears welcomed back outfielder Sean Zollner, who is fresh off his season with
Southeast Missouri State University baseball team. Zollner is a powerful bat
the will be needed to drive in runs for the slumping Lazy Bears. Zollner greeted
the team by going 2 for 2 with an RBI.
Next weeks games are no easier for the Lazy Bears. June 7th’s games against the Undertakers at 8 p.m. and Skeeter’s Nest at 8:45 p.m.
shows no walk in the park. Hopefully, every thing will come together for the
Lazy Bears to put another tally in the “win” column.
Power Surge Hits Lazy Bears
June 10- It was rainy, hot,
and humid, which turned the 1 and 5 Lazy Bears into some kind of monster Tuesday, June 7th. The not so “Lazy” Bears, took both games of the double header and were even kind enough to
send the Undertakers and Skeeter’s Nest home for an early exit on the 10 run mercy rule.
“ Man, I’m feeling it. I’m hitting one out tonight,”
said outfielder Chauncey Brooks to other outfielder Tim Baum during play. Brooks
kept his word when he came up to bat in the bottom of the first when he hit a 2 run shot for the first Lazy Bear home run
on the season. That home run sparked something in the Lazy Bear offence, which
forced them to double their season run total by hammering out 33 runs on the night.
The first game against the Chester
native Undertakers, showed how much potential the Lazy Bears offence and defense has in store for their opponents. After the Brooks home run, third baseman Kyle Schwartz stepped up and decided that he would show off his
power by hitting another home run in the first inning making the score of 4-3 advantage Undertakers. After the second inning flew by, the LB’s kicked it into high gear once again by scoring 8 runs in
the third, 6 runs in the fourth, and 4 more in the fifth to force the 10 run mercy rule.
Once again, the LB defense held their opponent to only 5 runs on 2 errors. Final
score of the first game was 15-5. Big hitters against the Undertakers were shortstop
D.J. Goodson and catcher Greg Adams who were both a perfect 3 for 3. Also, manger/pitcher
Dan Bollmann and Kyle Schwartz combined 4 for 6 with 4 RBI’s.
After the blow out to the Undertakers,
the Lazy Bears did not let up one bit as they continued smashing whatever Skeeter’s Nest threw at them. The LB’s started off the game by scoring a fast 4 runs in the first and holding Skeeter’s to
3. After the defensive stop, Lazy Bear hitters kept teeing off on Skeeter’s
pitches. In the top of the 4th, outfielder and SEMO baseball product
Sean Zollner stepped up to the plate and became the third Lazy Bear to hit a home run on Tuesday night. The Lazy Bear offense went on to score a season high18 runs against Skeeter’s Nest. Eight out of the ten hitters in the line up had a multi-hit game, which was another season high. Clutch hitters for the second game were first baseman Billy Schlimme who went 3 for 4 with 5 RBI’s
and Sean Zollner going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s. Also D.J. Goodson continued
his perfect night at the plate going 4 for 4 making him an astounding 7 for 7 on the entire night and taking the his average
to a team high .704.
With the recent shock
of the explosive Lazy Bear line up, other teams in the league are no longer thinking of the Lazy Bears as a cakewalk. Next week, the LB’s take on Lollie’s Café for the fourth time this year
and are very optimistic on keeping the winning streak alive. Also, the LB’s
take on the dangerous Dizzie’s Café who smashed them 2 weeks ago of a score of 13 to 3.
With a new bat on the way and the offence finally in rhythm, the Lazy Bears will try to prove that they are no longer
an easy win and that they are the dynasty for the future.
Win Streak
Still Alive at Four Games, Clutch Hitting Keeps the Lazy Bears Rolling
June 17- Holding on to a two game with
streak is tough enough for the Lazy Bears to do, but trying to make it a four game win streak would almost be the inevitable. On Tuesday night the Chester’s Men’s Softball teams were hit with more
shocking news as the Lazy Bears continued the win streak to four games and crawled back to .500 win percentage with a record
of 5 wins and 5 losses. Arch rival Lollie’s Café and Steelville located
Dizzie’s Café were the latest victims of the Lazy Bears attack. Lazy Bears
won the previous meeting against Lollie’s of a score of 5-4, but Dizzie’s had their way with the LB’s in
their last match up. Second time around showed that Lazy Bear clutch hitting
and solid defense prove the LB’s are no laughing matter.
For the first game of the double header,
the Lazy Bears took matched up against Lollie’s Café for the fourth time this season.
In the first inning of play Lollie’s jumped out to a 2-0 by finding the gaps in the defense, but the LB’s
came back to the dugout and regained the lead by scoring 3 runs of a Danny Brewer double.
Later on, Lollie’s went on to score another run in the third inning, but once again, the Lazy Bears came back
by scoring 2 more to make the score 5-3. Then in the fifth, the LB’s turned
it on scoring 5 runs and 3 more in the sixth. Lollie’s went down fighting
though. They started to scare the Lazy Bears when the scored 3 more runs in the
top of the seventh, but in Lazy Bear fashion, the “D” held on to the lead and took home the fourth win of the
season of a score of 13-9. Big hitters for the Lazy Bears against Lollie’s
were the three, four, five spots in the line up. Billy Schlimme, Kyle Schwartz,
and Danny Brewer went a combined 7 for 8 with 9 RBI’s.
At around 9 p.m., the Lazy Bears took
on the dominant Dizzie’s Café for the last game of the double header. Things
looked down for the Lazy Bears when Dizzie’s hitters put five runs on the board in the first inning of play. The Lazy Bears finally scored a run in the second making the score 6-1 Dizzie’s. Then in the third inning, things turned around when Deven Bleem showed all-out-Lazy Bear-hustle, when he
gave up his body and dove head first into first base for a safe call, which pumped up the beaten down players to start the
Lazy Bear rally. The LB’s chipped away at the 5 run deficit by scoring
3 runs in the third and 2 runs in the fourth making it an all out tie at 6-6. Once
again, Lazy Bear defense held off the powerful bats of Dizzie’s Café and kept the score even going into the seventh
inning. That is until Billy Schlimme stepped up with 2 outs and came through
clutch hitting a single up the middle and scoring Chauncey Brooks from second making it a score of 7-6. It took four Dizzie hitters to make three quick outs and to give the Lazy Bears their fifth win on the season
and kept the winning streak alive at four games. “This was a total team
effort tonight. I’m glad we hung in there throughout the game and chipped away at their big lead. This was a very big win for the 5 and 5 Lazy Bears,” said pitcher/manager Dan Bollmann. Clutch hitter for the LB’s were Bollmann going 2 for 2, Brooks going 3 for 4, and once again Billy
Schlimme hitting 3 for 4 with the game winning RBI.
Next week the Lazy Bears hope to continue their
winning ways by defeating the dangerous brewed team, Bud Light and Chester’s own Undertakers. Bud Light took the win in the first match up on the year in week three of a score of 15-9. On the flip side, the Lazy Bears won their first meeting with the Undertakers by smashing them of a score
of 15-5 in a 5-inning mercy rule.
Bud Light
Washes Away Win Streak, Lazy Bears Bury the Undertakers
June 24- Coming into Tuesday night’s
game against the crafty Bud Light team, the red hot Lazy Bears and a tight grip a hold a four game win streak. All that came to an end after the 9-3 Bud Light team ended the longest win streak in Lazy Bear history. Even after the loss, Lazy Bear heads hung high because of their great run and knew
they had another streak to start the second game of the double header. Lazy Bears
took on the up-and-down Undertakers for their second meeting. This match up was
no different than the first. Lazy Bear hitters pounded the ball all over place
for the beginning of a new win streak.
Lazy Bear players knew coming into this
game there was much riding on this mid-season match up against Bud Light. Bud
Light was 3 games a head of the Lazy Bears with a record of 9-3 and wanted to get back the loss they were handed in the first
meeting between the two teams. Bud Light came out and hit powerful shots that
the LB’s could not handle and ended up scoring four runs in the first inning of play.
Bud Light held the LB’s scoreless until the second on a Tim Baum double that brought in two runs. Greg Adams came up next and scored Baum on hard hit single which made the score 4-3 in favor of Bud Light. Defense and good pitching held both teams scoreless until the sixth inning when Bud
Light made the defense work to get a single out. Defense allowed three runs in
the inning and the winning streak was coming close to an end. When the seventh
inning rolled around, the Lazy Bears were down to a score of 9-3, but the Lazy Bears went down with a fight. The LB’s scored 4 more runs when the bottom of the line up got a rally going. Although the Lazy Bears gave Bud Light a scare, they ended the LB rally and got the third out, which ended
the four game win streak. “It
sucks that we lost our concentration in two of the innings that led them to becoming bigger innings than they should have
been. During the winning streak we didn't have those lapses and those lapses
cost us this game,” said manger/pitcher Dan Bollmann. Big hitters for the
Lazy Bears in the loss were the 4,5,6 and 7 hitters. Schwartz, Brewer, Baum,
and Adams all went 2 for 3 as well as scoring all the teams runs.
After
the loss, the Lazy Bears knew they had to rebound and prove that the win streak was not a streak of luck. In the second round of the double header, the Undertakers came into game off the 15-5 loss to the Lazy
Bears two weeks ago. It was déjà vu for both teams as the Lazy Bears smashed
the Undertakers once again. Things started off slow for the Lazy Bears when they
scored only two runs and allowing five. Things stayed the same until third when
Sean Zollner hit a humpback liner to center field where controversy had erupted. The
Undertaker centerfielder had appeared to make the show string catch, but home plate umpire “Dino,” thought otherwise. Dino had said the ball was trapped on the ground with the glove and awarded Zollner
with the safe call for a single. The Lazy Bears went on to score five runs that
inning all with two outs. After the five run rally, the LB’s never looked
back. Lazy Bear hitters went on to smash pitch after pitch scoring seven in the
fourth, and three in the sixth. Also the defense held the Undertakers to only
two runs for the rest of the night. Final score of the game was 18-7, Lazy Bears
in six innings. After the game, the Lazy Bears made history once again noticing
that everyone player in the line up had at least 2 hits. “We put our hitting
shoes on for game two. Great balance throughout the lineup with everyone contributing
to a big win to get us back on the right page before our two big weeks ahead,” said Bollmann. Clutch hitters for the LB’s were once again the 4,5,6, and 7 spots.
Schwartz, Baum, Zollner, Adams, and Renk all went 3-4 and had 15 out of the 18 RBI’s on the night. Renk especially had a spectacular night breaking out of his slump going 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and
5 RBI’s.
For
the next two weeks, the LB’s play the first place Eagles and the powerful bats of Dizzie’s Café. On June 28th, the Lazy Bears are holding “Retro Night,” where Lazy Bear players
will wear their throwback uni’s of the 2004 X-396 team. With a new win
streak on the line, the Lazy Bears will hope to continue on what Bud Light took from them and will keep the bats hot throughout
the scorching summer.
Roller Coaster Night for the Lazy Bears Brings Season Highs and Lows
June 29- Coming into Tuesday night, the
Lazy Bears knew they had a huge challenge ahead. Playing the two top teams in
the league was not going to be difficult, but would end up needing an act of God to sweep the double header. Lazy Bears continued to show the “Sparta Inconsistence,” in Chester when they suffered the
worst loss in team history and had the largest win in team history. Highly skilled
veterans of Miller Light Eagles were soaring high after they embarrassed the Lazy Bears of a score of 20-0. After sitting out a game, the LB’s heard good news that they were not going to play the second place
Dizzie’s Café, but were going to play the last place Skeeter’s Nest. A
scheduling error caused the Lazy Bears to think they were in for a rough night, but ended up setting a record number of runs
scored against Skeeter’s Nest.
For the first challenge, the Lazy Bears
took on league leaders Miller Light Eagles. The Eagles have only suffered defeat
twice this season and the Lazy Bears were looking to make it a third time. With
the retro Daryl jerseys on, the Lazy Bears took the field and did not come off for some time.
The Eagles picked apart the Lazy Bear defense once again scoring 5 fast runs, but the Eagles were not done. Finally with two outs recorded in the first inning, the Eagles went on to put 6 more runs on the board
making it a very lopsided score of 11-0 after the first inning of play. When
returning back to the dugout to hit, the Lazy Bears had no answer to the skilled pitching and stellar defense of the Eagles. This continued through out the game with the Eagles pounding each pitch and the LB’s
barely making contact on pitches. Only 8 Lazy Bear hits were recorded on the
night that led to a Miller Light shutout. Final score to the massacre was 20-0 Eagles. Greg Adams and head-trainer Eric North
had perfect nights at the plate with Adams going 2 for 2 and North getting a pinch-hit single.
After regrouping and eating some snow
cones, the Lazy Bears decided to take the embarrassing loss out on the last place Skeeter’s Nest. Lazy Bear hitters started off slow by only scoring one run in two innings.
After that, manager/pitcher Dan Bollmann told the Lazy Bears to put on the “hitting shoes,” and to start
scoring some runs. Bollmann’s comment proved to be very inspirational when
the LB’s went on to score run after run. Hitters pounded Skeeter’s
Nest pitches all over the field scoring 5 runs in the 3rd and piling on 7 more in the 4th. At one point in the 5th inning, the Lazy Bears had 9 consecutive hits with out getting
an out and scored 9 runs making it a final score of 22-0. Defence showed their
great ability by turning the first 6-4-3 double play on the year. Before the
game, short stop D.J. Goodson mentioned that the Daryl retro jerseys were to be burned at the steak because of the bad play
against the Eagles, but with the largest margin of victory in Lazy Bear history against Skeeter’s Nest, all players
decided just to keep the jersey in the closet. Clutch hitters on the night for
the LB’s was Bollmann going 4 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and Chauncey Brooks going 2 for 4 who added 4 more RBI’s.
Next week will be the ultimate challenge
for the 7 and 7 Lazy Bears. Taking on the Miller Light Eagles once again for
the first game, could be déjà vu for the LB’s. The veteran softball players
are very hard to beat, but hopefully the Lazy Bears will put up more of a fight to compete for a win. Also, the Lazy Bears will take on the second place Dizzie’s Café for the third time this season. The Lazy Bears took down Dizzie’s in a 7-6 thriller off at game winning hit
from Billy Schlimme.
Bears Down
Eagles, Dazed by Dizzie's
July 6- The Lazy Bears got their revenge
against the league leading Miller Lite Eagles. The Eagles, a traditional powerhouse
in the league, were stymied by the stellar defense and pitching coupled with a great deal of timely hitting. The Lazy Bears started out the game with five quick runs that put them up 5-1 after the first two innings. The Lazy Bears were able to get out of a sticky situation in the third with a fantastic
defensive play when the ball deflected off of the pitcher Daniel Bollmann the ricocheted to the second baseman Jonathan Norton
who fired to first to retire the side stranding runners on second and third. The Lazy Bears and the Eagles exchanged runs
for the next few innings until the Lazy Bears were able to break out in the 6th extending their lead to 12-2. After a rough bottom of the inning that allowed the Eagles back into the game at 12-7,
the Lazy Bears put one more on the board and held the Eagles scoreless to make it a final of 13-7. The thought of the game comes from Jonathan Norton who said, “After the first inning I just felt
that we were going to win that game, the game really gave us a huge confidence boost.”
The players of the night were LCF Danny Brewer with a perfect 4-4 night, SS DJ Goodson and RCF Tim Baum going 3-4.
In the final game of the night the Lazy
Bears took on Dizzie’s Café. The Lazy Bears were able to score twenty runs
in the game, but still came up short in the end with the final score 26-20 win for Dizzie’s who featured three monster
home runs in the game. The Lazy Bears were the home team in the game and that
let Dizzie’s get a head start on the Lazy Bears scoring seven in the first. The
LB’s rallied to take back the lead 12-10 in the third highlighted by a huge three run shot from RCF Tim Baum. The rest of the game was like a teeter totter with the lead going back and forth until the seventh where
Dizzie’s put up 8 runs to take an eight run lead into the bottom of the seventh.
The LB’s fought back with three runs in the seventh on a home run by DH Chauncey Brooks, but came up short in
the end. First baseman Deven Bleem was quoted after the game as saying “I’ve
never seen so many triples be hit off on pitcher, in one game, and in a row.”
To bring back memories of the baseball days of old Andrew Hargis was heard saying after a Dizzie’s home run “He
hit that ball into orbit!” The big hitters of the second game were SS DJ
Goodson and LCF Sean Zollner both going 4-5.
The Lazy Bears season record stayed at
the .500 mark at 9-9. The Lazy Bears will return into action with their second
and final Friday night affair playing Undertakers at 6:30 and Lollie’s at 7:15.
The Lazy Bears look to move their record to above .500 for the first time this season with a hopeful sweep of Friday’s
games.
Layoff Doesn't Slow LazyBears; Pick Up Two Wins En Route To Playoffs
July 25 – The LazyBears were back in action on Monday after a 17 day rest, to make up some games from earlier
in the season against Skeeter's Nest and Bud Light. The LazyBears had some early trouble shaking off the rust of the
rest, but the LazyBears came up victorious in the game 12-10. After falling in a hole early the LazyBears rallied for
5 runs in the next two innings to get things going. The LazyBears kept their lead over the Skeeter's just wide enough
to feel good and coast through the rest of the game. The player of the game goes to Sean Zollner with a 3-3 performance
in the outfield. A part of his three hits was his now team leading 4th triple of the season. While Zollner highlighted
the lineup everyone else was solid with almost every hitter collecting two hits. WIth the win the LazyBears
felt pretty good, but they were out to prove that they are the team to beat in the last weeks of the season. The only
way the LazyBears could do that is by sending a statement to the league by beating the only team they have yet to beat in
the two years down at Chester, Bud Light.
In the second game of the double header the LazyBears were able to do just that by beating Bud Light 12-10 in a game
filled with timely hitting, sloppy defense, and shotty pitching. However the LazyBears were able to get the best of
the game by constantly pushing runs across the plate in crucial situations. The LazyBears again fell behind early 4-1,
but the rally was on again with the LazyBears coming back to take the lead at 5-4. The game was a see-saw affair from
then on with Bud Light taking a lead into the 6th. That was the decisive inning of the game where the LazyBears took
over for good. With their newly found timely hitting the LazyBears were able to take the lead to the tune of 12-8.
In the bottom of the inning Bud Light threatened, but were unable to capitalize due mainly to Sean Zollner's patrolling in
the outfield. With the leftfielder in a ball was sent to the wall by a Bud Light hitter, but Zollner retrieved the ball
and threw a strike to 3rd to get the runner out by a step causing the flow of the game to shift to the LazyBears for good.
The hitters of the game was our very own "Cherokee Person" Kyle Schwartz by going 4-4 and collecting an RBI and Chauncey
Brooks with a 2-4 night also collecting 4 RBI's.
With the two clutch wins tonight the LazyBears move to 12-9 and have shown they are the team to beat in the last weeks
of the season. The LazyBears will return to action tomorrow at 6:30 and 7:15 to play the Eagles and the Undertakers
in what could be their final action on the season. The LazyBears would like to end their season on a high note before
returning to school in the fall, so come out and root on the LazyBears as they march their way to victory!
Schlimme
and LazyBears smashed by Miller Light; put Undertakers six feet under on route to playoff birth
July 26th - In the final contests of the year the LazyBears went up against the top team, the Eagles, and the team
chasing them in the standings the Undertakers. The LazyBears were unable to take out the division leaders, but they
were able to finish the season on a high note beating the Undertakers to end their season.
In the first game of the night the LazyBears took on the Eagles and lost by the score of 13-4.
The LazyBears fell behind early by a score of 7-0 due to walks and some hot shots directed at the first baseman Billy Schlimme.
"Dan, I quit. I'm not standing in front of the next shot hit at me." Luckily for Billy and the LazyBears
no more shots were hit at Billy, so the LazyBears in typical LazyBear fashion fought back in the next two innings
to bridge the gap to 7-4 before a little more hitting of the Eagles finally put the game outta reach by scoring six unanswered
runs to end the game and leave the LazyBears looking for a win in their last game of the season. The clutch hitter of
the game was Chauncey Brooks, breaking out of close to a year long hibernation, going 3-3 with an RBI.
With the final game of the season staring the LazyBears in the face they looked to rebound
against the Undertakers and rebound they did. The LazyBears jumped on the Undertakers early with 10 runs in the first
four innings. The scoring was highlighted by Sean Zollner's second homerun of the season and several great plays by
the LazyBears defense. The leading hitters of this game were Chauncey Brooks who kept up his hitting from the previous
game going 3-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI's and also Danny Brewer was 3-3 on the night.
After the game the LazyBears were greated with the great news from the commissioner
of the league. The commissioner approached Daniel and told him that he himself was very impressed with their efforts
on the season and also how they were able to have the best time out of all the teams there. The commish then extended
an invitation for the LazyBears to compete in the state tournament in Red Bud on the weekend of the 20th of Aug. with the
league paying the entrance fee. The LazyBears are excited for the opportuinty to be the best in the state, but will
sorely miss the players who will be returning to school and not able to return for the games.
All in all, the LazyBears first season of existance was a very memorable one. The LazyBears
finish the season at 13-9 which gives them 8 more victories than last year. The LazyBears also set many records for
themselves both as individuals and as a team *check them out in our stats and roster pages*. The LazyBears would like
to thank all of our fans, friends, and most of all each other for putting together a great summer!
